How long after shampooing your carpet can you walk on it?

February 8th, 2010
jatexgirl asked:

I am planning to rent a carpet shampooer from Home Depot, does anyone know how long before I can walk on it? It will also be about 65 degrees with the heat on in the house. Do I only have to do it on a day when I can open the windows? And can I walk with clean white socks on the carpet if it is partially wet. Is there a routine I should follow in order to shampoo my carpets myself? Thanks for all your responses.
Will walking on the carpet, not make it dirty?

Carpet Cleaning For Flood Damage In Carpeting

December 30th, 2009
Vikram Kumar asked:

Flood damage can be very problematic and costs millions of dollars each year. Sadly, many people do not have flood insurance to protect them from this type of damage. When carpets become wet because of flood damage, many people feel that they have to either replace the carpeting or just leave it alone. They often do not consider carpet cleaning for water soaked carpeting.

Carpet cleaning is not just to get the carpets cleaned, although it should be done periodically for that purpose. Good carpet cleaning companies can also repair flood damage to carpets. Before you toss out old carpeting that has been flood damaged, call a carpet cleaning company to see if they can help you.

The carpet cleaning company will take a look at the flood damage that has been done to the carpeting and will give you an estimate on what needs to be done to get the carpet repaired. In most cases, they will be able to extract the water from the carpeting and then dry clean the carpeting. This can repair the carpeting so that it looks as good as it did before you had the flood damage.

While carpet cleaning is not always an option when it comes to flood damaged carpeting, it should be considered before you commence to tossing away all of the carpeting. You should never allow the damaged carpeting to just sit and assume it will dry up as it will usually cause mold and mildew to build up underneath. This can be toxic and can cause health problems for the entire family. If the carpet has experienced flood damage, you need to act.

If the extent of the flood damage is too severe, the carpet cleaning company will tell you and advise that you replace the carpeting. If, however, they are able to extract the water and clean the carpeting, it will cost you a lot less money to have this procedure take place rather than replace the carpeting.  And just leaving the flood damage carpeting should not even be an option.

If you have flood damage, do not assume that there is nothing that can be done treat the carpeting and either leave it or automatically tear it up. Call a professional carpet cleaning company that is experienced at handling water extraction as well as cleaning carpeting. Get an estimate from the company to see ho much it will cost to clean the carpeting and get it back into the shape it was in before the flood damage. At the same time, you may want to have the rest of the carpets in the house cleaned as well.

Never allow flood damaged carpet to stay in the house without doing something about it. It can cause a mold and mildew build up that can make your family sick. Call out professional carpet cleaners to take care of the problem as soon as possible so that all the carpeting in your house is clean and free from excess water that can be due to floods.

Can’t Afford New Carpet, Clean Them Yourself. You May be in for a Surprise

December 21st, 2009
Albert Lazo asked:

Have you gotten tired of your carpeting?. For years you may have been saying that you will get them replaced. You’re tired of dealing with the stains, spills and the expense of maintaining it. Now, you may be finding yourself in a financial crunch and it’s definitely not the time to invest in new flooring, so what can you do.

Have your carpets cleaned either by a qualified professional or if you’re courageous and have some time on your hands try cleaning them yourself. Before we give you some tips we think it’s important that you should know why diy carpet cleaning attempts often produce inferior results.

Just because they look clean doen’t mean the job is done right

What in the world does that statement mean?. You went out and rented a machine, followed directions and now your carpets look great. “Is this guy crazy or what, of course I did a great job and I did it right, so there”.

Carefully follow these simple tips and you’ll have the best succes when doing your own carpet cleaning.

Fact and Tip #1

Vacuum before you start

Do not skip this step. Chances are you’ll be renting a carpet cleaning machine or you may already have one of your own. Either way these units are underpowered compared to a professional carpet cleaning unit. You need all the help you can get in getting all the loose soils out before you throw a bunch of water in your carpet. It’s easier to vacuum loose soils then it is for your carpet cleaning machine to pick up mud. Go slow when you vacuum and make sure the bag is less then half full and the vacuum is working properly.

Fact and Tip #2

The deal with residue

One of the main reasons carpet resoils quickly after a cleaning attempt is due to the residue which you may have left. A soapy residue will attract dirt. Chances are that you’ve read this all over the internet but don’t make light of this statement. It’s worth mentioning again “Soapy residue will attract dirt and make your carpets resoil faster then need be”. Here’s a simple metaphor. Wash your clothes and before the rinse cycle, turn off the washer, air dry the clothes and wear them. You’ll have some sticky clothes  and a miserable day to boot.

We highly recommend that whatever carpet cleaning agent you bought that you do not put in your machine. Do what some professional cleaners do. Put the cleaner in a 2 gallon spray container. You can buy these in box stores and they are usually under the gardening section. Spray the solution on your carpets after they have been thoughroughly vacuumed. Let the cleaner dwell and if you have some kind of brush to agitate use that.

Fill the carpet cleaning machine with plain water only. Unless you went nuts on the pre-spray and mixed it way over dilution ratios it says in the bottle then you should have a pretty good chance of getting all the residue out. Hence a carpet that will stay cleaner longer.

Fact and Tip#3

Clean it up, get it dry ASAP

Think about the dirt in your carpet and how you’ll be getting that dirt out. Depending on how soiled and how long the fibers are, chances are that even in your best attempt you will not get all the soil out. Wicking will most likely occur specially if you leave the carpet too wet.

Wicking is the process of dirt comming back up through the fibers as they dry. The faster the carpet is dried the better chance that wicking will beminimized. You may have seen how kids put a few drops of water in a wrapper of a straw. The water will wick to the top of the straw. Imagine the water having some dirt as they may after a carpet cleaning. This dirt will wick up to the top of the carpet fibers. To minimize wicking run your machine a few times to throughly rinse your pre-spray. Then make a few slow dry passes. Do this in small sections. Rinse, rinse, dry , dry, dry. If you have a fan put it down asap. Small fans will most likely not make much of a dent in the drying process so the bigger the better. Turn the heater on your house up a few notches and crack a couple of windows.

In closing

Follow these few simple steps and your chances of having clean carpet that will stay clean longer will be much greater. The only negative about this is that you may no longer need a new floor and decide to keep your carpet because they are now beautiful. Unfortunately now you may not have a fighting chance with your spouse in justifying a new floor purchase. Of course to do a real bad job just reverse all the tips above “see honey, I told you we need new flooring”.

Take care,

Albert Lazo

Carpet Buying - a Beginners Guide

December 18th, 2009
Bob Janeway asked:

The reason why carpet is so popular with homeowners is pretty obvious: it provides a home a certain warmth and beauty without being too expensive. It radiates luxury and coziness and provides what most naked floors can’t: noise reduction and thermal insulation that give a room a certain quiet and comfort.

Buying carpets

Before setting out to buy carpeting, consider first where you will be putting it. Consider light-colored carpets for areas like bedrooms and studies where there is less traffic or foot use. For areas which will receive heavier use, choose medium shades like taupe or dark beige. Dirt and stains will not be too noticeable with these colors.

Dark-colored carpeting provides an intense, dramatic look, but they will also show stuff like dust, lint and pet hair more readily.

You’ll want carpeting that can last for years and withstand wear and tear, so look for carpets with firmly twisted fibers. These carpets can withstand more abrasion and will last longer, regardless of whether they are made from synthetic or natural materials.

Look for long fibers or ‘plushes’ – these won’t shed too much and you won’t need to worry about carpet fibers flying about or finding their way on other surfaces. To test for shedding, dig the surface of the carpet with your fingers and drag them across. If you find very few fibers sticking to your fingers, that means the carpet will retain its body and that it’s a good buy.

‘Cut pile’ carpets have shorter fibers and can be very stylish, but they can easily reflect usage like footprints, for example. The fibers also have a natural bend and if they are brushed in the opposite direction during use, some areas may show a different, darker shade.

Your fiber options

There are numerous choices for carpet fibers made from natural and/or synthetic materials. Which one you buy will depend on what look you want, where you will use the carpet and your budget.

Natural wool is your best choice. It’s not only durable, but it’s also soft to the touch and offers good cushioning. It is also the most expensive material for carpets and can cost from a low of $30 to over $100 per sq.yd. This type of fiber will withstand constant use even in heavy traffic areas. It’s also easy to clean because it’s naturally stain- and dirt-resistant. You won’t have any problems with color since it is easily dyed.

Synthetic fibers are also very popular choices for carpeting. These are usually acrylic, polyester, olefin and nylon. Acrylics are sometimes used with natural wool because they have similar characteristics. Polyester is a cheaper choice and are quite durable and luxurious to the touch. Olefin, also called polypropylene, is a great choice for outdoor carpeting because it is resistant to mildew and moisture. Nylon, like olefin, is also mildew and moisture-resistant and is another popular choice for carpet fiber because of its resilience and durability.

Carpet cushions

Most homeowners prefer to install cushions under their carpeting for more resilience and softness. Cushions come in natural, synthetic and urethane materials, but be careful about buying cushion that is too thick because it would result to a carpeting that is too soft. Look for firm, dense material that is about 3/8 of an inch thick or even less.

Carpet replacement

Carpets which receive regular wear and tear need to be replaced every five years or so, maybe less if there is too much wear on the fabric or difficult to remove stains. These are carpets located in heavy traffic areas like the kitchen or living room. Otherwise, most carpets won’t usually need replacement up to 10 years.
